New article on Arthroscopic Knee Surgery

This story recently hit the mainstream media on MSNBC, citing new studies that may indicate that many arthroscopic knee surgeries are unnecessary, and are no more effective than less invasive therapies for treating osteoarthritis. Here is the primary original article if you haven’t seen it yet:

HSL Exhibit: “Opening Doors: Contemporary African-American Academic Surgeons”

We, the Health Sciences Libraries, are sponsoring the traveling exhibit, “Opening Doors: Contemporary African-American Academic Surgeons” from the National Library of Medicine. During August and possibly through September, the 6-panel exhibit will be on display on the 4th Floor, Taubman. To catch different traffic flows, the exhibit will be moving in locations around the 4th floor. In October, Opening Doors will be moving to the Gallery (Room 100) at Hatcher Graduate Library.

We will also be hosting two events in connection with the exhibit, an invited speaker and a panel discussion. Dr. Alexa Canady, a pediatric neurosurgeon featured in the display, will be coming to campus to speak on October 5 at 1:30 p.m. at the Graduate Library Gallery. Dr. Canady holds her Undergraduate and Medical School degrees from the University of Michigan and is known for her “patient-care first” approach to practice. Learn more about Dr. Canady at:

Plans are underway for a hosting a diverse panel of health providers talking about their experiences in overcoming certain challenges in
order to achieve their present positions. We hope that this panel

The University of Michigan’s Health Sciences Libraries have produced a video highlighting Second Life and Public Health. Second Life is a virtual world through which an active public health community is simulating disaster scenarios, creating interactive health games, offering people with disabilities a place for support and social networking, and providing a space for professionals to view presentations and attend international conferences. This video showcases the potential of this new media.

New search engine: Cuil

A group of ex-Google folks have created and launched a new search engine called “Cuil” (pronounced “Cool”).

Cuil is purported to provide more (and more detailed) indexing of the web, and different search algorithms based on more than just popularity (the driving factor in Google’s algorithm, which determines the order that sites appear in your search results list). It remains to be seen whether Cuil will compete with Google, but in the meantime, check out the site and more info about Cuil

Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research online access

The University Library has recently updated its holdings information for “Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research” online. The journal changed publishers from Ovid to Springer beginning in 2008, and this is now accurately reflected in Mirlyn, the library’s online catalog.

We need to wait for our next journal holdings load before the change will be seen on the E-Journal Finder page and in MGetIt; if you link to articles via MGetIt from PubMed or UM-Medsearch, select the “Mirlyn” link option to access 2008 articles online.
